How to Coloring a Good Batch of Gelatin with Pigment and Titanium?

Give color to gelatin ribbon that forms softgel shell is a common practice in many softgel manufacturers’ factories. The colors yellow, red, brown, green and etc give a more appealing appearance to softgel capsules, making it more attractive to buyers, especially for kids, cosmetics.

For workers who had no experience in softgel gelatin coloring, they might come across with below 2 situations which result by not good coloring:

Situation 1:

After gelatin color mixing, there will be small particle in the solution.

This is because the titanium doesn’t fully melt.

Situation 2:

Some color comes out not exactly what supposed to be such as yellow and red; the color is not even, not homogenous.

This is because the process is wrong. User should put pigment and before de-aeration, by this way the color will be quite even and nice.

Below are steps you can follow and self-check.

  • Step one, take a certain amount of glycerin, grind in the colloid mill, and then add titanium, milling for several minutes. After colloid milling, put the mixture into a container.
  • Step two, take a certain amount of glycerin, add some water, grinding by colloid mill too. And then add pigment, keep milling for about several minutes, and then put the solution into a container.
  • Step three, add the solutions from step 1 and step 2 into a small container/flask, mixing for 1 minute.
  • Step four, in the big gelatin melting tank, mix the water, glycerin, and gelatin power well, and then stop. Adding the mixture from step 3 into a big gelatin melter, turn on the agitator to stir for some minutes.
  • Step five: Start the de-aeration process in the gelatin melting tank.
Above is what the user should do when coloring gelatin in the big tank. There are some detailed data and tricky timing and temperature requirement to follow, especially when there is titanium. The gelatin coloring procedure has to follow step by step. If you are interested to know, feel free to contact us.
